Dornenreich - In Luft Geritzt

Prophecy North America
The Austrian band Dornenreich's sound has changed a lot over the years. After beginning as a melodic black metal band, they are more ambient these days. The duo of Eviga (voice, guitar, percussion) and Inve (violin) have gone completely acoustic on their sixth full-length.

In Luft Geritzt alternates between songs that are quiet, soft and introspective to those that are more upbeat, intense and raucous. The acoustic guitar and violin blend really well. The violin sets the tone and is sometimes yearning and sad, and other times happier and more optimistic. Being all acoustic, this CD won't appeal to those looking for something really loud and intense. It has some elements of folk metal, and fans of that genre may find Dornenreich's music appealing.

The vocals are unusual. Instead of singing or growling, Eviga adds whispers and some spoken word vocals that are sparse and secondary. The music is at the forefront, and the vocals work to accent or punctuate musical passages. In Luft Geritzt is a unique sounding CD, and an often compelling one.
