The Classic Struggle - Bring Back The Glory

Ironclad Recordings
The Classic Struggle hails from the oceanfront town of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, but these guys are definitely not laid back surfer types. Their sophomore album Bring Back The Glory kicks off with the song “F You,” setting the tone for what’s to come.

Bring Back The Glory is intense thrash metal of the old school, modernized with metalcore and traditional metal influences. The songs are fast and frantic, played with speed and dexterity. Then the ‘core kicks in, slowing down the tempo and upping the brutality. Glacial grooves and breakdowns bring the speed way down, then The Classic Struggle returns to breakneck thrash.

Tim Zlinksy does a good job with the vocals. His delivery is angry and passionate, but he also varies his tone and intensity, going from low pitched growls to high pitched yowls.

Even though there’s variety within the songs, it can be difficult to tell one song apart from another. While there’s plenty of intensity and good musicianship, the songs could use more distinctive riffs and hooks. The closing title track does have a catchy riff, and that combined with the factors mentioned above makes it an excellent song. Bring Back The Glory has a few of those, but it could use a few more.
